Amathunta Pyramids (artificial reef)
The Amathunta marine protected area, known as The Pyramids, was Cyprus's first and is still its largest artificial reef (2009, 2.5 square km), named for the old harbour of ancient Amathus. Four boulder pyramids form a square with about 100 more concrete blocks around them; the highest pyramid is 18 m tall and its holes shelter fish but exclude larger species and divers. A series of statues adds interest. Bream, grouper, moray eels, octopus and sea urchins live here and green and loggerhead turtles are occasionally seen. Depth 18–35 m, Open Water qualification, boat or shore access.
