Twilight Zone

Ambon's most famous muck site is the debris-strewn black-sand slope around the aviation-fuel jetty at Laha village, on the north side of Ambon Bay next to the airport. Named in 1995, it holds an astonishing list of critters: frogfish of many kinds including the local psychedelic frogfish, wonderpus and starry octopus, flamboyant cuttlefish, ornate ghost pipefish, seahorses, stonefish, demon stingers, leaf scorpionfish, mantis and Coleman shrimps and countless nudibranchs. Around midday, sun beams through the moored fishing boats light up shoals of silversides and catfish.
