Malta – Main Island
The main island combines easy shore diving with some of the best wrecks in the Mediterranean. At Cirkewwa in the north-west the Arch, the Madonna statue, the P29 patrol boat and the tug Rozi make a classic shore-dive complex; on the south-west coast the 110 m tanker Um El Faroud at Wied iz-Zurrieq and the cave systems of Għar Lapsi are among Malta's best-known dives. Around Valletta and the south-east lie HMS Maori, the Blenheim bomber and the protected deep wrecks HMS Southwold and SS Polynesien, while the north-east has the Beaufighter, the Imperial Eagle and the submarine HMS Stubborn. Several of the deep wrecks (below 40 m) are technical dives; the officially protected ones need a Heritage Malta permit or a licensed operator.
