Palško Lake (Pivka intermittent lakes)
Palško is the largest of the 18 intermittent lakes of the Pivka basin: about 1 km² of water, up to 2 km² at the highest level with the Ždinki and Njivce bays, filled by the Matijeva jama estavelle and springs on its eastern side. Water stays on average three months a year; the rest of the time it is a mown meadow, so underwater you find drowned grass, shrubs and whole trees, field tracks on the bottom, earthworms and tiny crustaceans – the Matijeva jama spring occasionally even washes out olms. Near Matijeva jama, the deepest part (about 10 m), there is a whole submerged forest. It is a large, cold, long dive for when rivers and the sea are unpleasant after autumn or spring rain.
