Cobalt Caves
Cobalt Caves is on Osprey Reef about 3.1 km north of Raging Horn, with the mooring on a very large bommie at about 7 m. A series of coral bommies reaches to within a few metres of the surface, then a sandy slope runs to about 35 m before a sheer wall that is over 400 m deep close to the reef. Gullies and sand "rivers" between the bommies lead to a large sandy plateau; look into the blue for whitetip and grey reef sharks, barracuda and eagle rays. Located in the Coral Sea Marine Park (Australian Marine Parks); Parks Australia notes Osprey Reef is for experienced divers and is protected from fishing. Liveaboard guests need no personal permit (operators are authorised); confirm zoning and rules on the official Coral Sea maps.
