Eagle Rock
Eagle Rock is a coral bommie about halfway along Ribbon Reef No. 10, level with North Direction Island and a few kilometres inside the main outer reef. It rises from about 25 m to 3 m, measuring roughly 40 by 30 m, with two smaller bommies off its south-west and south-east corners. The mooring is on the southern side. Divers circle the bommie, starting at about 20 m and spiralling up to the base at 15 m; McFadyen's team found large gorgonias, huge corals and two olive-green sea snakes over 2 m long. Located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park: Green (no-take) zones allow diving without a permit, but fishing and collecting are prohibited; tourism operators hold the park permits and the environmental management charge is passed on through the operator. Check the current zoning map before any non-operator visit.
