Hausriff Südstrand (Meeschendorf, Fehmarn)
The house reef of the Tauchen Südstrand base lies right in front of the campsite on Fehmarn's south shore at Meeschendorf, only a few metres from the kit-up area. It is shallow – 3 to 5 m at most – with sand and gravel, large seagrass meadows, algae and scattered boulders that shelter small animals. Crabs, pipefish, shrimps, jellyfish, flatfish and sticklebacks are typical, and with a sharp eye you will find snails and starfish. Because the south shore is usually in the lee of northerly winds, the sea is often flat and the base reports around 10 m visibility in summer; it is also a popular night dive.
