Cenote Angelita
Angelita lies about 17 km south of Tulum, a short walk from the highway into the jungle. It is a deep, round sinkhole of about 60 m where fresh water sits on top of salt water. At around 30 m a dense hydrogen sulfide cloud forms on the halocline, creating the famous illusion of a misty underwater river with tree trunks rising out of it. Unlike most cenote dives, it is a deep, mostly open-water descent rather than a cavern swim.
Facts
- Region: Mexico – Riviera Maya Cenotes
- Area: Tulum
- Depth: 0–30 m
- Level: advanced
- Current: low
- Type: cave
- Coordinates: 20.13746, -87.57825 (approximate)
- Highlights: hydrogen sulfide cloud at ~28–33 m (the 'underwater river'), halocline beneath the H2S layer, submerged tree trunks and branches poking through the cloud, ~60 m total depth, deep open-water style descent
- Tips: This is a deep dive: operators require Advanced Open Water (Mexidivers plans to 30 m; Under the Jungle lists it as Level 3, needing prior cavern experience and AOW, +USD 25 surcharge). Showcaves also notes a 20-logged-dive requirement. Deeper dives into the saltwater layer are technical/decompression dives. There is no cavern swim-through; it is not a full-cave site for tours. Entrance fee per Mexidivers: MXN 350 – check current.
