Dreamgate
A series of shallow, horizontal caverns in the jungle beyond Dos Ojos, part of the Sac Actun system. Without dive lights it is completely dark, and the torch beam reveals a dense forest of delicate stalactites and stalagmites. Two cavern guidelines run upstream and downstream to a maximum of about 10 m. It featured in the BBC's Planet Earth series.
Facts
- Region: Mexico – Riviera Maya Cenotes
- Area: Akumal – Xel-Há (Dos Ojos)
- Depth: 0–10 m
- Level: intermediate
- Current: low
- Type: cave
- Coordinates: 20.30516, -87.3927 (approximate)
- Highlights: densely decorated stalactites and stalagmites, total darkness – torch-lit dive, upstream and downstream cavern lines, fossils, filmed for BBC Planet Earth
- Tips: Because it is dark and the formations are fragile, operators ask for advanced certification or a check-out dive, excellent buoyancy and no claustrophobia, even though it is shallow. Leaving the cavern lines (jumps at the line arrows) is full-cave diving and requires cave certification. One shop lists 440 MXN per diver (check current).
