Musandam – Oman

Musandam is an Omani exclave on the Strait of Hormuz, cut off from the rest of Oman by the UAE. Its rugged coast is split by sea-flooded valleys (khors), which is why it is called the Norway of Arabia. Khasab is the regional centre; the dive sites are reached by speedboat or dhow, from Khasab on the strait side and from Dibba on the Gulf of Oman side (Lima Rock, Octopus Rock, Ras Lima). Operators speak of 23 to 30+ sites. Expect plankton-rich water, changing visibility and sometimes strong tidal currents; dolphins are common and whale sharks are reported in season.

Facts

Season

Diving is possible year-round. Autumn (Sep–Dec) is the most popular; winter water is cooler (21–24 °C), summer 28–30 °C with plankton often reducing visibility. Sources differ on the best months and on whale shark timing (Sep–Nov, Sep–Feb, May–Oct).
