Monad Shoal
A roughly 1.5 km long rock plateau about 8 km from Malapascua on the edge of a 200 m drop, with a flat top at 20–24 m. It was the original thresher shark cleaning station, and the sharks now more often use Kimud Shoal, but Monad still produces devil and eagle rays, occasional mantas and, according to some operators, sporadic tiger sharks. Dynamite fishing and a ship grounding in 2016 damaged parts of the coral.
Facts
- Region: Malapascua – Philippines
- Area: Shoals (thresher sharks)
- Depth: 20–30 m
- Level: advanced
- Current: moderate
- Type: seamount, reef, drift
- Coordinates: 11.3134, 124.1947 (approximate)
- Highlights: thresher shark, tiger shark, devil ray, eagle ray, manta
- Unverified: Position taken from OpenStreetMap's mapped shoal point; depth range combines Wikipedia (flat top 20–24 m) and a nitrox note on the deeper plateau; thresher presence has shifted since 2022.
- Tips: The shoal is about a 30-minute boat ride away and the dive is deep: nitrox helps, and the sharks are less reliable here than at Kimud since 2022. Ask your operator which shoal is currently best.
