Nanoščica at Cenetov mlin
The slow Nanoščica stream meanders across the marshy plain between Nanos and Postojna before joining the Pivka just before Postojna Cave. Remains of old mills survive, and their weirs still deepen the stream enough for swimming and diving; around Cenetov mlin east of Landol there are many meanders, oxbows and small ponds. The deepest point is a pool of about 3 m by a wooden jetty used as a jumping platform; elsewhere the clay channel averages 2 m, carpeted with algae and fallen branches, with shoals of small fish just below the surface.
Facts
- Region: Slovenia – Lakes, Rivers & Caves
- Area: Notranjska & Brkini (Cerknica, Postojna, Pivka)
- Depth: 0–3 m
- Level: beginner
- Current: low
- Type: channel
- Coordinates: 45.79173, 14.14754
- Highlights: remains of old mill weirs, 3 m pool by a wooden jetty, shoals of small fish, occasional freshwater mussels, oxbows and small ponds
- Tips: From the Postojna–Razdrto regional road turn north at Dilce towards Landol/Predjama, then right on a field track in Landol for just over a km to the mill remains; park at the end of the track by the pool with the wooden jetty – the land beyond is private (the alternative access from Hrašče also crosses private land). Clay banks are steep and slippery; enter and exit only where banks are stone-reinforced, e.g. by the jetty. Downstream you reach the weir in under 10 minutes; upstream as long as you like. Compass for poor visibility (about 1 m in summer), snorkel for a surface return. Best at medium-low water. The SPZ sheet dates from 2017; river gravel, banks and access roads may have changed since.
