Soča–Tolminka confluence (Tolmin)
Since the Doblar hydropower dam was built in 1936, its reservoir has backed up the Soča as far as the Tolminka confluence just below Tolmin, so the river here flows slowly, especially at low summer water. You can dive either upstream against the gentle current or downstream towards the reservoir. The Tolminka is too shallow to dive but brings slightly clearer water. Depth is around 5 m but shifts with gravel banks after floods; most fish are in the deeper parts of the channel.
Facts
- Region: Slovenia – Lakes, Rivers & Caves
- Area: Soča Valley (Bovec – Kobarid – Solkan)
- Depth: 0–5 m
- Level: beginner
- Current: low
- Type: channel, drift
- Coordinates: 46.17363, 13.74115
- Highlights: head of the HE Doblar reservoir, clearer Tolminka inflow, fish in the deeper channel, gravel bed and rocky banks
- Tips: Park at the gravel car park on the road bend between Most na Soči and Tolmin; a track (closed to cars by a boulder) leads 50–100 m down to the water. You cannot exit everywhere on the banks and the right bank is hard to reach, so finish where you started. Best at low water; current is stronger in the shallows. Visibility is poor, slightly better at the Tolminka mouth; bring a compass and small torch. The spot is a popular bathing beach, so expect bathers in summer. The sheet dates from 2013 – gravel moves.
