Vipava at Batuje weir
By Batuje railway station and the former agricultural-tool factory, a weir on the Vipava forms a long, deep pool as the river cuts through vine-covered flysch hills towards the Pekel narrows. The gravel bed is richly overgrown, with boulders, fallen trees and stumps, and reaches 4.5 m on a right-hand bend above the weir. Fish are very shy – usually all you see is a cloud of silt from a fleeing fish – so it is more about the landscape than wildlife.

- Tips: Leave the expressway at Selo, drive through Batuje and take the small unsigned road south to the station, cross the tracks and the Vipava bridge; a small unpaved car park for 3–4 cars is on the left bank right after the bridge. A short gentle path leads to the weir, the easiest entry/exit. Swim upstream under the road bridge and turn at half air; up to ~1 km upstream the dive can last over two hours (snorkel useful). Below the weir it is too shallow. Dive at low water; noticeable current at the weir; night dives possible. The SPZ sheet dates from 2012; river gravel, banks and access roads may have changed since.
