Greece – Crete

Crete's best-documented diving is on the north coast. Around the Akrotiri peninsula and Cape Drapano near Chania, fast boats reach sea caves and caverns such as Elephant Cave, Seal Cave and Cathedral Cave, and the steamship Minnewaska lies at Marathi in Souda Bay, one of eleven Greek wrecks opened to visits by the Ministry of Culture in 2022. East of Heraklion, Hersonissos offers the St George wall and a Messerschmitt Bf 109 at 24-28 m, and sheltered Mononaftis Bay at Agia Pelagia has guided shore dives. In Lasithi, dive centres work from Elounda and Agios Nikolaos (Spinalonga, the Mirabello Gulf) and from Sitia, while the south-east around Ierapetra has the WWII cargo ship Rawnsley. Greek law limits where and how you may dive, so always go with a licensed centre.
