Hungary – Lakes & Training Sites

Most Hungarian divers train and keep in practice in a handful of managed lakes. The Kotró gravel-pit lake at Gyékényes near the Drava has a year-round dive base with sunken cars and boats. The Palatinus Lake at Dorog has training platforms, a rope trail and a small underwater museum. In Tata, the Fényes springs keep their lakes at 18–25 °C even in winter and can be visited on guided dives. Visibility is modest (a few metres) and pike, zander, catfish and crayfish are common. On navigable waters and in harbours, including Lake Balaton, diving without a permit is restricted, and in most quarry lakes swimming and diving are banned. Dive only at sites with an operator or a written permission.

Facts

Season

Balaton and the quarry/gravel lakes: water is 23–26 C in August and 2–5 C in winter. Summer algal blooms and boat traffic hurt visibility; spring and autumn are clearer. The Balaton is shallow with modest visibility; ice diving is possible in hard winters. No dive-specific source was found.
