Mexico – Cozumel & Caribbean Coast
The Mesoamerican Reef runs along Mexico's Caribbean coast, and Cozumel sits right in the Yucatán Current: its west-coast reefs and walls are dived as relaxed or fast drift dives from boats, inside the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park. Across the channel, Playa del Carmen is known for its seasonal bull-shark dives and wrecks, while between Cancún and Isla Mujeres shallow reefs, sunken navy ships and the MUSA underwater sculpture museum suit every level. Most sites lie in national parks run by CONANP, which charge a daily park fee, and boat dives are run by licensed operators. Hurricane season (June–November), sargassum and coral-disease closures can affect plans.
Facts
- Protected areas: Most sites lie in federal marine national parks managed by CONANP: Arrecifes de Cozumel (declared 19 Jul 1996, ~120 km², south of the International Pier around Punta Sur, to the 100 m isobath; Ramsar 2005), Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc (1996, ~87 km², includes MUSA) and Arrecife de Puerto Morelos (2 Feb 1998, 9,066 ha; Ramsar 2004). North-Cozumel walls such as Barracuda lie outside the park. (source: wikipedia.org, puertomorelos.gob.mx, aida-americas.org)
- Marine park fee (wristband): A daily CONANP park fee applies; the operator usually issues a wristband per diver per day. One Cozumel shop lists it at MXN 212 (≈ USD 12) per person per day, not included in its prices, while others (ScubaTony, Phantom Divers, Wet Set) include park fees. Check current amount. - Cozumel drift diving: Most Cozumel boat dives are drifts: the group descends and surfaces together while the boat follows the bubbles. Current ranges from mild to ripping depending on site and season; carry an SMB. Southern (Punta Sur) and northern reefs are often restricted by operators to AOW + nitrox divers with a prior check-out day. (source: cozumeldivecenter.com, scubadiving.com, bluewaterdivetravel.com)
- Bull shark season: Pregnant female bull sharks visit Playa del Carmen roughly mid-November to March (some years they leave by mid-January). Dives are static at about 24 m on sand; operators typically require AOW or 20+ logged dives. Sightings are not guaranteed. (source: justdivenow.com, phantomdivers.com, deepmexico.com)
- Water temperature & visibility: Water is about 26–29 °C year-round, slightly cooler in winter; visibility around Cozumel often exceeds 30 m. Winter 'nortes' (north winds) can cancel boat trips. (source: divessi.com, justdivenow.com)
- Hurricanes & sargassum: The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June – 30 November, peaking around 10 September. Sargassum seaweed arrives mainly in spring–summer; 2025 was a record year for Quintana Roo (≈91,500 t collected by 31 Oct per the state environment agency). Check current conditions. - Coral disease & temporary reef closures: Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) reached Cozumel by 2018. CONANP closed Palancar, Colombia and El Cielo from 7 Oct to 15 Dec 2019, and in Feb–Mar 2026 closed El Cedral, Pared de El Cedral and Punta Francesa due to bleaching and white syndrome. Closures can recur; check current. (source: undercurrent.org, wikipedia.org, rivieramayanews.mx)
