Micronesia – Yap, Pohnpei & Kosrae

Three of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia, spread over some 2,500 km of the western Pacific. Yap is known for resident manta rays at shallow cleaning stations, shark dives and southern walls; Pohnpei, a high volcanic island ringed by a barrier reef, offers black-morph mantas, reef passes and outer atolls (Ant/Ahnd and Pakin); Kosrae has an unspoiled fringing reef, drift dives and a few historic wrecks in Lelu and Utwe harbours. Yap's reefs are held under customary village ownership and Pohnpei has a state system of marine protected areas, so access is normally arranged through a local dive operator.

Facts

Season

Diveable all year. In Yap the manta season is Dec–Apr (mating season); summer is wetter but better for dolphins and pilot whales. Pohnpei and Kosrae seasonal data was thin, so the regional pattern is used.
