Muscat & Daymaniyat Islands – Oman

Muscat is one of the few capitals where daily boats reach reef, wreck and shark dives within 15–40 minutes. Bandar Khayran, south-east of the city, has around 20 sites from sheltered coves to walls, including the Al Munassir wreck, an 84 m navy ship sunk in 2003. Fahal Island ('Shark Island') lies about 4 km off the coast with coral gardens, a wall, a swim-through and reef sharks. Further north-west, about 70 km from Muscat, the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve is a protected group of nine islands with turtles, leopard sharks and dense reef fish; it needs an Environment Authority permit and is closed to visitors from May to October. Further south-east, Sifah and Ras Abu Daud offer rocky walls and a shallow wreck.

Facts

Season

The Daymaniyat reserve is closed to visitors May–October, so trips there in practice run November–April; Muscat-area sites can be dived year-round, but in summer the water is above 30 °C. Dive the World reports visibility best in September–October and whale sharks most likely September–November (not guaranteed). The month classification is an estimate from the sources, which give no single 'best months' list.
