Greece – Cyclades & Dodecanese
The central and south-eastern Aegean combines volcanic scenery with wartime wrecks. In the Santorini caldera, dives run along walls and lava formations around Nea Kameni, Aspronisi and Thirasia, while Milos offers basalt columns at Glaronissia and the sea caves of Kleftiko and Papafragas. Off Kea lie the Britannic, the Burdigala and the Patris in a protected underwater historic site that can be dived only on guided, non-penetration dives with licensed Greek centres. Further east the Dodecanese add the coast and caves of Rhodes and the Second World War wrecks of Leros, such as the destroyer Vasilissa Olga in Lakki. In 2022 the Ministry of Culture opened 91 ship and aircraft wrecks to organised recreational diving; this module marks which listed sites are guided-only and which positions are only estimates.
Facts
- Best season: May – October; PADI gives May to October as the best time on Milos, with water around 22–27 °C. Most centres in this region are seasonal
- Visibility: Many Santorini listings give excellent visibility (over 30 m); listed sites around Rhodes and Kea are mostly 'good' (10–30 m). User-entered figures, not measurements
- Getting there: Islands are reached by air or ferry from Athens (Piraeus/Rafina); Kea is the closest to the mainland, Rhodes, Kos and Leros are in the Dodecanese far to the south-east
- Diving law (Greece): A 2020 law removed the general depth limit outside military exercise areas and allows dives on wrecks over 50 years old and on archaeological sites, but only with a guide from an authorised Greek dive centre or club. Dive centres are licensed under Law 3409/2005 according to Kea Divers. Rules change – check current rules
- Designated wrecks (91): In 2022 the culture, defence and shipping ministers opened 91 ship and aircraft wrecks (sunk 1868–1970, depths 10–120 m) to organised recreational diving: documentation is required first, nothing may be touched or moved, and research on wrecks needs a Ministry of Culture permit. The South Aegean list includes Kea, Milos, Paros, Naxos, Santorini and eight Leros wrecks. We could not open the ministry list itself (403), so entries rest on copies and are marked
- Kea Underwater Historic Site: The Britannic, Burdigala and Patris are dived only on guided, non-penetration dives with a licensed Greek centre (legal framework completed June 2022). Individual divers may not dive them; the minimum distance is 300 m, insurance and a recent medical statement are required, and Kea Divers sets a 16-knot wind limit. Protected zones of 360 acres around each wreck are described; check current rules
- Rhodes restrictions (unclear): Older sources say only Kalithea Bay was a released dive site on Rhodes, with the rest of the island restricted because of seabed antiquities; one tourist source says the restrictions have been lifted, another still describes designated areas. No current official list was found – dive only with a licensed Rhodes centre and ask which sites are allowed
- Permit authority: Underwater heritage and wreck research fall under the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities (59 D. Areopagitou & Erechtheiou, Athens; eena@culture.gr; +30 210 92 35 105 as listed on the ministry page in search results – the page itself blocked our fetch, so confirm)
Season
- Best months: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep
- Acceptable: May, Oct
- Poor: Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr
- Water temperature: 22–27 °C
PADI gives May to October as the best time on Milos with water typically 22–27 C; we found no source for winter conditions and most centres are seasonal. Kea Divers allows Britannic dives only below 16 knots of wind.

Site positions are approximate unless marked otherwise (only HMHS Britannic has a published exact position) and are for orientation only – never for navigation. Many sites come from user-entered listings; wreck access rules in Greece are strict and change, so always dive with a licensed local centre and check current rules.
