Poland – Flooded Quarries

Flooded quarries are the backbone of Polish inland diving: they are clear, sheltered, close to the cities and open almost all year. Most have a dive base on the shore that charges an entry fee and fills tanks. Koparki in Jaworzno is a former dolomite quarry with two huge excavators left on the bottom; Zakrzówek in Kraków is a 32 m limestone quarry now inside a city park; Piechcin in Kujawy offers up to 15 m visibility; and the Honoratka lignite pit near Ślesin goes down to 47 m with an underwater forest and a sunken helicopter. Below the summer surface layer the water stays at a few degrees, so a drysuit is common outside midsummer.
