North Sulawesi: Lembeh, Bunaken & Bangka

The north-eastern tip of Sulawesi packs three very different dive areas around Manado. Bunaken National Marine Park (Bunaken, Siladen, Manado Tua, Mantehage and Nain) is famous for steep coral walls dropping into deep water, with turtles on almost every dive and pelagics in the blue. Across the peninsula, the sheltered Lembeh Strait between Bitung and Lembeh Island is the classic muck-diving destination: black volcanic sand hiding frogfish, mimic octopus, pygmy seahorses and countless nudibranchs, plus a few reefs and WWII wrecks. To the north, Bangka and Talise offer current-swept pinnacles smothered in soft corals.

Facts

Season

The dry season, March to October (April to November for Bunaken per some sources), is best, though diving is possible year-round. In Lembeh July–September has slightly cooler water and more sightings. Calm conditions suit beginners.
